Some people get SUVs simply because they find them attractive, or because they believe (subconsciously or otherwise) that SUVs project strength and wealth. They're certainly marketed that way.
I believe you are on to something. If you look at what an SUV really does, you could see that most other vehicles classes do a better job. The only problem I have with the marketing aspect is that I imagine I have been subjected to all this marketing just like every other man, woman and child in this country and I still don't understand it.
At any rate, This class of vehicle will become the symbol of the folly of our generation.
