AFAIK it was the "Air Jordan" that made Nike a breakout brand. Nike paid $$$ for pro sponsorship when they were a pretty small company and then became of the "shoe of the masses" only after they had success sponsoring pro athletes.
Actually, they are very different companies. From what I understand, Cervelo actually makes a good product. Nike is all about marketing. Ever try running any length of time/distance in their product? Horrible. Nike bought their way into the footwear industry, and yes they are king of the athletes, but not because they made a good product first.
