I think that most newbies choose SPD's because that is for some reason considered to be the standard. On Saturday's ride, everyone in the "B" group were using either SPD or Look pedals, AFAIK. Everyone in the "A" group, save one, were using Speed Plays.

I have always used Speed Plays because the people giving me advice were all using them.
