I have both spds and ultegra pedals. I do most of my commuting in spds but the real hammer down type road riding is done in the ultegras. There is much less play (movement) between the cleat and the pedal with the 3 hole style pedals, imo.

That said, SPD is a huge upgrade from platforms in terms of performance. All of my off road bikes still use spds with no complaints.
