Trek 728 crank/derailluer question

Hi everyone, I'm hoping you can help me out with shifting situation I have. On my Trek that I use as my every day commuter and Sunday ride I can't seem to get smooth running in all gears. When I first got the bike it had a 53/46 Biopace double and stem shifters which actually worked rather smoothly, only problem was getting over a rather large and steep causeway twice a day in windy conditions. Went to my LBS looking to replace Biopace rings with something smaller. After looking in his book, it looked like the rings would be kind of pricey because of the 130 bolt circle. LBS Guy produces a Origin 8 compact double from the back (kinda ugly) , but should do the trick ($80.) Anyway when everything is adjusted correctly, when I'm in the small ring I can't use the three smallest cogs because of cross-chaining noises and the chain rubs against the larger ring as well. In the large ring I'm getting cross-chaining noise when I'm in the largest cog. LBS guy say's get use to it and stay out of those gear combos. But these are some rather useful and handy gear combos. Components: Sachs Maillard 12/24 rear with long cage Shimano 105 rear derailluer-Origin 8 39/52 double - Shimano 8 speed bar end shifters. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to give as much relevant stuff as possible, I'm thinking maybe a triple would be the answer, but not sure about compatibility etc. Thanks for all your help. Great site.
