I tried SPD and SPD-SL....no comparison...SPD-SL was far easier and more positive to clip into. I got the cheap PD-R540 (since I was unsure of what pedal system I'd settle on) and they've been pretty good. I haven't felt the need to upgrade yet probably will when these wear out or start to look crappy.
