the centre is recessed relative to the cages. I have not ridden them, but i checked them out when I was passing through annapolis. these will feel like most other rat traps, with high ridges fore and aft.
Maybe try the MKS grip king that rivendell sells if you dont like cages. otherwise, I would look into the gr9 pedals with cages and straps. These are my favourite currently available pedal. My all time favourite is the SR SP-11 with cages and straps.
