Part of the problem with the darkness is the ubiquitous white garage door. The camera is going to read the exposure as being bright due to the door taking up so much of the frame. So anything else in the frame si going to be underexposed. Try a different background or if your camera can do it, set it to "overexpose". That's the great thing about digital photography. You don't waste film and paper getting a good exposure.
