I don't want it to record when I'm walking around with my bike after rides/races or if I make a pit stop and walk my bike around for a while.

If you unclip it and put it in your jersey, it won't record power (and should go to sleep if you have it set to auto start by speed).
It's wireless, so it continues to record even if it's in my pocket.
