You might want to contact the parts and service departments of the BMW dealers in your area and tell them to be on the lookout for someone (body shop, independent repair shop or owner) either purchasing the mirror, or getting it replaced. If BMW body parts are like Volvo's, the mirror comes already painted to match the car. Ask that they contact the local police if the person shows up.
