It's not so much comparing a stock GT mountain bike to a Euro City Bike, as it is comparing a mountain bike built into a city bike (i.e, by adding fenders and racks) to a Euro City Bike-- and in my opinion, the mountain bike-based city bike is a superior vehicle in almost every respect for city riding. Granted, the Euro City Bike looks more fashionable if you're in dressy attire, but that point-- and chain grease-- aside, the mountain bike based-city bike just flat out outperforms the Euro City Bike by any measure one cares to compare.
I guess I understand better now, except why isn't your comparison bike fitted with all the things you mention that make a city bike outperform a MTB for its intended purpose(chainguard, fenders,kickstand,baskets/racks)?
