Congrats on riding your age!

My experience is that as you start to ride longer distances foot issues can get more serious if you're prone to sore feet.

Sidi MTB shoes are terrific; the sole is likely much stiffer than the shoes you are using.

In my own case, I had to switch from SPD pedals to Look pedals to solve foot issues I was having on very long rides.
