Buying a Cheap Road Bike - Help

I would really like to get into road cycling for fun, exercise, and commuting. I am looking for a cheap starter bike. Something to learn to ride on and if it breaks, learn how to fix it and keep it maintained. Over time I plan on converting it to Single Speed, but I was thinking maybe starting on a multi-speed would be better until I get into better shape

I have been looking at Craigslist and the classifieds, and I found a bike shop that sells used bikes but over the phone said they do not currently have any in my size. I have also scanned through the discussions here about the BD bikes.

Would it be worth it to get something like one of these over the Dawes if the standover height was a couple inches too much? I guess what I mean is, how big of a deal is sizing - how small is too small and how big is too big??

these are the BD bikes I was looking at:

I am 5'9" with a 30" inseam so I would get a 49 or 52 cm

Thanks
