schwinn sucks donkey balls, don't get anything you can get in walmart (/kmart/target ect) if thats ur budget go used
if ur borrowing a friends bike, have him come to look at the condition, the biggest problem with most used bikes is a uber worn chain, thats so worn it has worn out the cassette and chainrings, so u'd be lookin at like $100+ in parts alone, other than that most other common problems are just adjustments or inexpensive to fix, brake pads ect are easy.
I'd invest in a chain checker when going to look at used bikes so that if its at 1% stretch you basicaly know it would cost alot to fix, chain by itself is no biggy, like $20 but if you need an entire drivetrain...
ask your friend who knows bikes to go with you
