They were the first clipless pedals I tried when I began cycling. I had a very hard time clipping in and out of them. Especially on steep hills; the pedals would hang up side down. I went down three times trying to get out of them. I found out that if the pedal isn't all the way down, the would bind and I couldn't get out. The last time I fell, it was in heavy traffic.
I have never had any of them problems with Speedplays.
Ahh. I spent my youth on a velodrome, so the tighter the pedals the better. I like the hanging upside down, as that puts them in the same position every time. You just have to learn a simple toe flip to get into them (just as easy as stomping on Speedplays in my experience). I'm not sure what you meant by "all the way down" and binding, but I hope I don't figure it out for myself any time
