My 13 yo bought a pair of Shimano mtb shoes that have the recessed clips. He just walks down the gravel road and then clips into the pedals on the pavement. A buddy of mine bought a set of pedals from Performance that are clipless on one side and platform on the other. They also used a recessed cleat with mtb shoes.
