Do you have the old ball bearings? what's the diameter of the balls, and how many were there total? As a first shot, duplicate that on the fixed cup. If the spindle won't seat right, try removing one ball.

Are the bearing faces smooth and shiney?

I think there was a different set up in the C-record bottom bracket. Can you identify the crankset you have?
