ch - yes, you need a very clean cut with *no* frayed ends. Wire cutters will not do a good job on these cables. If you search for "cable cutters", you'll find some very spirited discussions on which brands are good and which are bad and whether or not using a Dremel instead is best; I'd plan on spending at least $20-25.
