+1 for using old cassettes. Thats what I've done for all but one of my SS. You can use the cogs too. They you only have to worry about tension. and even then, search for home made chain tensioners, soem really good cheap or free ideas, or do a google search for a magic gear calculator to find out your "magic" gear for your setup.
