I think this issue is less about waving and more about being open-minded and respectful. When I read things like "I waved at an average looking guy", I ask how you came to this description? Average bike, average clothes, average shoes, average water bottle? Does money spent on bike/clothing determine this "average" status or did you interview this person on mileage, speed, and feet climbed to determine that this rider is an "average" Joe. Roadie snobbishness (again, this is not ALL roadies, not even close) seems rooted in superficial judgements about gear. Of course there are a-holes in everywalk of life, but the general level of roadie snootiness is a bit on the high side. I've been around tons of mountain bikers, roadies, and runners, and my feeling is that roadies are a bit more snooty than people in these other sports. Just my two cents.
