I'd get a trunk or hitch rack. You can be the most careful driver in the world and it only takes being a little preoccupied to end up with your bike crammed into the garage door frame. If you do go with a car top rack I'd do what my neighbor does. Every time he takes the bike out on car top he pulls his trash can over into the empty space so that he can't pull the car back into the garage.
