You sound like you're on the right track. The CAAD9-7 could work for you, I think it's in your price range. Around that price I would also definitely check out some Fujis, giants, maybe a Felt (I know their low end models run ~$1000, but not if they dip below the 1k mark). Keep an open mind and shop around and test ride some bikes, go with the one that feels most comfortable to you, also keep in mind if you like the shop you're buying from and make sure you like them.
