Fitting Shimano/SRAM cassette

I know the basic principles behind removing/installing Shimano or SRAM cassettes on a normal splined freehub. Just a couple of questions.

1. When fitting a new cassette, where should I apply grease? On the lockring I guess, but also on the splines/body of the freehub? Anywhere else? Is normal lithium grease ok?

2. How can I judge the correct tightness for the lockring without a torque wrench?

3. Is it better to remove cassettes by placing the removal tool in a vice and turning the chainwhip, or stand the wheel upright?

4. Are SRAM Powergilde PG-950 and PG-970 cassettes fully compatible with Shimano 9 sp chains and derailleurs?

Thanks
