The Russians had portable car phones back in the early '60s. The radio-based Motorala MTS was available around that same time... '64 I think. The analogue cellular-based Motorola "brick phone" was first tested in the early '70s. I bought one in 1985 and still have it today. It worked better than my current cellular service with no drop-outs or interference. Most likely due to fewer people on the system than today's way overloaded circuits.
