blazingsaddles,

No, I think that's a more recent case (perhaps in the 1990's) - our group was riding in pairs at the time, but just to the left of the white line, so we were in the "normal" place on the road for a group such as ours...

Actually, the main peleton were well ahead of us (we being more touring cyclists, er, slower), so, we were more of a single entity rather than the entire ride when the accident occured.

In our case, those injured were from out of state and I'm not sure if they ever did return for a compensation trial (and we being from South Florida), but, I can tell you that the man responsible (per the newspaper article) was from the local area and was already known to police...

What bothered me (not to get off-topic) was that he did not seem bothered by his actions - that troubled me almost more than anything.

P.S. Per NOS88's question, we were riding on SR 520, which did (does) have a reputation for being a dangerous road, but, it was just after sunrise and the traffic was very light (again, this was 29 years ago). Still, the local paper did mention the road's history for fatalities - on the other hand, we were riding in a reasonable manner, nothing that would lead to what happened, for certain...

P.P.S. Just to end on a good note (♪), my Mom's inspired encouragement the very next day gave me the courage to get back on the bicycle right away (I'll guess that had I not, my riding days would have been over) - I'll guess and say that God knew there were still too many good miles ahead (there were), for which I'm greatful!!!
