Problem is they are trying to do things the same way as usual. For alternative power generation the answer lies in the middle between massive generation and small local generation. They make some vertical axis wind turbines that don't have the huge blades, install a couple of those on everybody's house where you have the wind power to support it and you can generate quite a bit of power without having to build mega farms. Ditto solar panels where appropriate. Also people could learn to live with a lot less power than they currently use.
