Basically, yeah, that's all that's essential.

You can refine the process by first adjusting the derailleur's inner limit screw to set the chain over the inner chainring of the double. Then shift the left side brifter to the granny position. Disconnect the fd's cable, pull out all of the slack and reattach it. Refine the shifting with the barrel adjuster as needed.

That way, the shifter will use the former granny and middle ring clicks as the inner and outer chainring clicks on the double and the outer limit screw will prevent using the now redundant third position. There is no way of inadvertantly shifting to an unused position.
