Cutting Aluminum Seat Post (Pipe Cutter vs Saw)

I just purchased a new aluminum alloy seat post, which is 300mm long, and the one I'm replacing is 170mm. I don't have a miter/band/hack saw. I was reading (I think on BF, although I can't find it now) that someone said you can use a pipe cutter.

Would a pipe cutter (you know the kind that plumbers use to cut copper/iron pipes and clamps around the pipe while you slowly tighten the cutting wheel) work for cutting aluminum alloy seat post? Would a saw be better?

I actually have a pipe cutter, that is why I'm asking.

Thanks!
