I don't know anybody who rides in the gutter. If there is a white line painted on the right side of the road, I stay 1.5-2 feet left of that line. If there is a gutter, I stay about the same distance away from the seam between the gutterpan and the paving. This possition is generally in the auto's right tire track. It's not legal to ride in the middle of the lane here and I don't think it would help with motorist/cyclist relations so I don't do it.
