I agree with noisebeam that most of those incidents would have happened if you'd been up against the curb. But you were still safer in the middle of the lane because you'd given yourself more maneuvering room. In the parking spot incident, I think if you'd been over on the edge of the lane you'd been squashed like a bug between the two cars.

Keep riding where they can see you and you've got room to move.
