Part of this is that most soda mfr use SUGAR for their glass bottle sodas and HFCS for their plastic. However, you are right in that they are hard at work designing plastic that can preserve beer well.
As a side note, a local microbrewery has started using aluminum bottles. Which I'm still not sure about...
The bar I used to tend had those aluminum Budweiser bottles - they were terrible. As crappy as Bud is, it made the beer really tinny flavored...
