Bikes: Homebuilt steel

I’m starting to think this thing is working correctly, and the issue is design related. One more attempt to clarify what it’s doing…

- To shift from the small ring to the middle ring you have to push the lever about 45 degrees. There is a click noise and the shifter will hold in this position. After you achieve this upshift and let go of the lever, it will spring back to the start position.

- To shift from the middle to the big ring, the lever will move with no resistance back to the 45 degrees point, and then the resistance will increase from 46 to 90 degrees where the shift will be completed.

The main problem is that it’s very hard to reach that 90 degree point by pushing with your thumb. I was hoping there would be some kind of ratchet action where the internal mechanism could be moved with two 45 degree stabs of the lever instead of moving the full 90 degrees.

Guess I need to look for a better front shifter. The thumb shifters are a good suggestion, any other models to consider?
