Thanks for the info and the offers guys. The bike had some Shimano Deore friction touring shifters on it when I got it but one of them was missing a piece and did not work very well. I managed to scavenge a similar part of another old set of shifters and now it works ok.
Do you know if the shifters you list (600EX, Dura-Ace EX) were ever made in a 7 speed SIS? I don't mind friction shifting for now, but I would like to change to SIS at some point if it is possible...
