With only 5 gears, your options are limited so bar end shifters are a decent approach as you have thought. I doubt if you'll be able to find any that will index 5-speed, but you should be able to use them in friction mode easily enough. Used bar end shifters can easily be found on eBay as well as other classified sources. Good luck.
