You'll know the first time you get a knee injury from riding in the cold with no protection. It happened to me on a New Year's Day ride and kept me from riding the whole month of January. Another thing you have to watch for -- at least I do -- is riding hard in the cold (even with knees covered) without warming up long enough. If I start hammering right away on a cold morning, my knees will really bother me later.
