I've been researching this route to ride to Alameda, and there is not a decent way around using Hesperian for quite a ways. Hesperian has no bike lane, so you'd be taking the right lane, as it's too narrow to share.
Yes, I used to commute this way, and the drivers there definitely do not appreciate you taking the right lane. I was often the only bike on the road.
The rest of the route kb5ql gave you is pretty good.
