They should be set farther out to the sides, where you WILL be able to see a vehicle along side your rear wheel. The center rear view mirror will cover everything else.

Years ago I read about this, in an article about auto safety.
I tried it, and it was a huge improvement!
I can still see the side of my car, simply by leaning slightly toward whichever mirror I am using
This is rarely necessary except during low speed parking maneuvers.
