I was able to quite for about 2 weeks each time. But started up again with "hey bro can i bum a cig?" to people at work. The nicotine aids (i used the lozenges) helped me not need to smoke, but physically i still craved that "bite" of a cig and would want one every 4 hours.
Probably the only solution is to just HTFU

What worked for me was quit cold turkey. No nicotine substitutes. Plain chewing gum. I tried nicotine substitutes before but I caved. My wife bought this for me on the one year anniversary.
It was more than covered by the what I was spending on smokes. As I said in my earlier post, I still miss it sometimes.
Others I know have sworn by Allen Carr's books.
