Too late. The Fed tax on roll-your-own bulk tobacco went up over 2000% from about $1.20/lb to $23.75/lb. Taxes on cigarette tubes and papers saw similarly insane tax increases. This thanks to lobbying by the folks at Atria (Phillip Morris's new identity) and RJR who don't market bulk tobacco and consider it a threat to their market share. Now, in most places it's only marginally less expensive to roll your own. But RYO smokers at least get the advantage of fewer chemical additives, better quality tobacco and are usually satisfied to smoke fewer cigarettes.

There are about 1/2 million people who regularly roll their own cigarettes in the U.S.. Thanks to the big tobacco lobby, they get to pay the same amount of revenue as would have been raised by another 0.50/pack on the sale of hundreds of millions of cigarette packs distributed across tens of millions of smokers. The tobacco lobby managed to lower the proposed tax on cig. packs, cigars and (of all things) pipe tobacco and foist that burden onto the shoulders of just 500,000 of the poorest smokers in the country. And since there is no roll-your-own lobby, they took it in the shorts.

BTW, won't look like a badazz if you use the pre-made, filtered tubes. Can't tell them from "store boughts" by looking. You might look like a lot of things smoking them, but not a badazz.
