Not sure what you mean by cartridge based, unless you mean sealed cartridge bearings used for the hub axle bearings. Not aware of any other than the Rohloff I believe.

Shimano does offer a more waterproof version of their casette joint assembly for the 8 speed hubs which is designed to minimize weather and dirt intrusion into the shifter cable. The wet weather version is the CJ-8S40.

I have a couple of the SRAM hubs but as I live in a minimum rainfall area (Nevada) I am not sure about waterproofing.
