Just got back from a trip to SF on Virgin America and they only charged me $50 over the standard $15 checked baggage charge so I checked Virgin Atlantic. Lo and behold! Virgin Atlantic allows a bike to be checked for free provided it's packaged properly and does not exceed 32kg. Check
