Notice my use of past tense. The changes in sealing and now the internals also suggest that most Nexus 8 models had problems to begin with. Whether these design changes will make them more durable time will tell.

The Alfine/Nexus shifter is sealed and doesn't allow water in. Alfine and new Nexus hubs have very good sealing. The can take complete immersion while riding through streams with no water intrusion.
It is good to hear that they are 100% watertight, that is a very unusual but desirable property for a hub. I haven't seen Shimano make such claims, AFAIK even the Alfine isn't certified for off road use, so did you check your own hub by disassembling it after it had been immersed in water?
