I attended a Shimano clinic this winter where they demonstrated the oil dunking proceedure. Of course, they have their own oil formulation that they want you to use. They claim that whatever oil clings to the unit after dunking is adequate. No additional top up neccessary.

Also, with a Sturmey xrd8, some sort of oil seal would have to be devised for the drum to keep the oil out.
Also, the shifter cable no longer attaches to a chain coming out of the axle. There is a round plastic plate covering the rh side which the shift cable attaches to. It engages the shift mechanism and rotates about the axle to shift. The oil running out of the seam may attract grit and cause the shifter plate to bind. It covers about a 2 inch opening in the hub.
