I don't have a gut and I definitely prefer bibs. I don't even consider buying shorts anymore.

I wear the base layer under the bibs. I find that more comfortable and besides, how is it going to wick away sweat if it's not next to your skin.

Oh, and I always wear a base layer, even when it's in the 90's. (Though that would be a good occasion to make sure you grab a summer weight base layer and not one of the winter ones....).
