It's happened to me a few times, on mountain and road wheels. In one case, the rim strip moved and prevented the tire bead from hooking into the rim. I am still scared when pumping up a tire. Usually, I put in 20 psi, remove the pump, and spin the wheel in my hand, examining the bead for irregularities.
