I think there is a sharp bend in there, but more seriously a design flaw in not designing in an extraction port on the 'low gear' position where you can actually force the shifter to. Hence my 10 minute fix to drill a port...

But yes, I too will replace cables annually, or at the very least inspect in there before big rides...
