Taken in context, Mr. Schwinn isn't saying anything about carbon v steel with that comment. He is stating that bicycles can be made lighter than what the pros ride, but are not. Real professional frames are over-designed to provide better performance in a variety of competition scenarios.

I would encourage everyone to listen to this discussion, it covers some very good topics regardless of your standpoint on frame material.
