I have a secure, indoor lockup for my bike so theft isn't a concern. In my case, I would rather wear out / replace a $12 chain on my fixed gear commuter than to wear out a Campy Record drive train & carbon wheels just commuting. I log about 3500km annually commuting and slightly less riding recreationally.

Ok, to me, this kind of reasoning makes sense. If you want to prevent wear and tear because it costs $$$ to replace components, ok. But to feel you have to get a beater because you fear your bike will get ripped off...eh. People shouldn't have to feel that way. In a perfect world, I guess.
