As noted by others a photo would help.
If you currently have a nutted rear axle it is almost certainly a solid axle and probably a cheap hub. W/O major surgery, such as a whole new rear hub, installation of a quick release cannot be done. Very few current rear hubs have both nutted and QR versions so far as I know so finding a QR axle that can be retrofitted to the current hub could be difficult to impossible.
