What sydney said. Check thrift shops, garage sales, etc, with any kind of frequency and you'll turn up a quality ridable bike for cheap in no time.

For example, I just picked up a 1992 TREK 1500 at the local thrift last week for $65.00, and it looks like new. Last month I picked up a Mondia Super, a Raleigh Record Ace, AND a Specialized Expedition for a total of $15.00. The Mondia needs a paint job, The Raliegh needed a rear axle, and the Specialized needed a wipe-down. All are on the road and are reliable good looking bikes that came from local thrifts.

You can put that $500.00 to better use!
